Introducing comic Fire Safety Super Hero 'Flash Max"!
Created by Firefighter and artist Michael Furman, Flash Max is a unique comic book-style super hero character designed to breathe new life into the message of home fire safety for children and families. With 29 years of experience teaching fire prevention to young students and children on the job, and with three young children of his own, Mike saw the need for a different, more interesting approach to bringing the fire safety message into the homes.
"The kids just didn't seem interested beyond the first few minutes of our public outreach fire safety talks, no matter how animated we were, or what audio-visual aids we used. Fire prevention can be a very 'dry' topic to get kids to digest, especially with all of the information that needs to be given. Enter 'Flash Max', and his side-kick partner Mr. 'Al-Arm', the Smoke Alarm! In a comic super hero platform, Flash Max's costume alone speaks volumes, while grabbing and holding children's short attention span and keeping them engaged throughout the message delivery. I also wanted to give children a super hero they could really look up to who also carries the important life messages of saying no to drugs and bullying," he says.
One look at Flash Max's super hero ensemble reveals several key-note features of fire safety: the bright red fire helmet grabs and directs your attention to the bold, white numbers '911' on his front shield; the bright, contrasting colors in his front emblem and sweeping red super hero cape: and 'Al-Arm' the Smoke Alarm teaches kids a lesson of his own with a bright green and red LED 'power' light, large, bubbly eyes, smoke intake register for a mouth, and a test button that, when pressed, actually activates a smoke alarm signal sound, teaching kids how easy it is to test their smoke alarms at home in a fun, easy and non-intimidating way!
